Interaction of martensitic microstructures in adjacent grains
It is often observed that martensitic microstructures in adjacent polycrystal
grains are related. For example, micrographs of Arlt exhibit propagation of
layered structures across grain boundaries in the cubic-to-tetragonal phase
transformation in . Such observations are related to requirements
of compatibility of the deformation at the grain boundary. Using a
generalization of the Hadamard jump condition, this is explored in the
nonlinear elasticity model of martensitic transformations for the case of a
bicrystal with suitably oriented columnar geometry, in which the microstructure
in both grains is assumed to involve just two martensitic variants, with a
planar or non-planar interface between the grains.Comment: 6 pages, 1 figure, submitted to ICOMAT 2017 Proceeding
Explicit approximate controllability of the Schr\"odinger equation with a polarizability term
We consider a controlled Schr\"odinger equation with a dipolar and a
polarizability term, used when the dipolar approximation is not valid. The
control is the amplitude of the external electric field, it acts non linearly
on the state. We extend in this infinite dimensional framework previous
techniques used by Coron, Grigoriu, Lefter and Turinici for stabilization in
finite dimension. We consider a highly oscillating control and prove the
semi-global weak stabilization of the averaged system using a Lyapunov
function introduced by Nersesyan. Then it is proved that the solutions of the
Schr\"odinger equation and of the averaged equation stay close on every finite
time horizon provided that the control is oscillating enough. Combining these
two results, we get approximate controllability to the ground state for the
polarizability system
Cross Section Ratios between different CM energies at the LHC: opportunities for precision measurements and BSM sensitivity
The staged increase of the LHC beam energy provides a new class of
interesting observables, namely ratios and double ratios of cross sections of
various hard processes. The large degree of correlation of theoretical
systematics in the cross section calculations at different energies leads to
highly precise predictions for such ratios. We present in this letter few
examples of such ratios, and discuss their possible implications, both in terms
of opportunities for precision measurements and in terms of sensitivity to

b-Initiated processes at the LHC: a reappraisal
Several key processes at the LHC in the standard model and beyond that
involve quarks, such as single-top, Higgs, and weak vector boson associated
production, can be described in QCD either in a 4-flavor or 5-flavor scheme. In
the former, quarks appear only in the final state and are typically
considered massive. In 5-flavor schemes, calculations include quarks in the
initial state, are simpler and allow the resummation of possibly large initial
state logarithms of the type into the
parton distribution function (PDF), being the typical scale of the
hard process. In this work we critically reconsider the rationale for using
5-flavor improved schemes at the LHC. Our motivation stems from the observation
that the effects of initial state logs are rarely very large in hadron
collisions: 4-flavor computations are pertubatively well behaved and a
substantial agreement between predictions in the two schemes is found. We
identify two distinct reasons that explain this behaviour, i.e., the
resummation of the initial state logarithms into the -PDF is relevant only
at large Bjorken and the possibly large ratios 's are
always accompanied by universal phase space suppression factors. Our study
paves the way to using both schemes for the same process so to exploit their
complementary advantages for different observables, such as employing a
5-flavor scheme to accurately predict the total cross section at NNLO and the
corresponding 4-flavor computation at NLO for fully exclusive studies.Comment: Fixed typo in Eq. (A.10) and few typos in Eq. (C.2) and (C.3
Two-loop Corrections to the B to pi Form Factor from QCD Sum Rules on the Light-Cone and |V(ub)|
We calculate the leading-twist O(alphas^2 beta0) corrections to the B to pi
transition form factor f+(0) in light-cone sum rules. We find that, as
expected, there is a cancellation between the O(alphas^2 beta0) corrections to
fB f+(0) and the large corresponding corrections to fB, calculated in QCD sum
rules. This suggests the insensitivity of the form factors calculated in the
light-cone sum rules approach to this source of radiative corrections. We
further obtain an improved determination of the CKM matrix element |V(ub)|,
using latest results from BaBar and Belle for f+(0)|V(ub)|.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figure
Oestradiol and prostaglandin F2 alpha regulate sexual displays in females of a sex-role reversed fish
The mechanisms regulating sexual behaviours in female vertebrates are still poorly understood, mainly because in most species sexual displays in females are more subtle and less frequent than displays in males. In a sex-role reversed population of a teleost fish, the peacock blenny Salaria pavo, an external fertilizer, females are the courting sex and their sexual displays are conspicuous and unambiguous. We took advantage of this to investigate the role of ovarian-synthesized hormones in the induction of sexual displays in females. In particular, the effects of the sex steroids oestradiol (E2) and testosterone (T) and of the prostaglandin F2 alpha (PGF2 alpha) were tested. Females were ovariectomized and their sexual behaviour tested 7 days (sex steroids and PGF2 alpha) and 14 days (sex steroids) after ovariectomy by presenting females to an established nesting male. Ovariectomy reduced the expression of sexual behaviours, although a significant proportion of females still courted the male 14 days after the ovary removal. Administration of PGF2 alpha to ovariectomized females recovered the frequency of approaches to the male's nest and of courtship displays towards the nesting male. However, E2 also had a positive effect on sexual behaviour, particularly on the frequency of approaches to the male's nest. T administration failed to recover sexual behaviours in ovariectomized females. These results suggest that the increase in E2 levels postulated to occur during the breeding season facilitates female mate-searching and assessment behaviours, whereas PGF2 alpha acts as a short-latency endogenous signal informing the brain that oocytes are mature and ready to be spawned. In the light of these results, the classical view for female fishes, that sex steroids maintain sexual behaviour in internal fertilizers and that prostaglandins activate spawning behaviours in external fertilizers, needs to be reviewed.Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) [POCTI/BSE/38395/2001, PTDC/MAR/69749/2006, 331/2001]; Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) [012/2012/A1]; FCT [SFRH/BPD/30367/2006
A statistical network analysis of the HIV/AIDS epidemics in Cuba
The Cuban contact-tracing detection system set up in 1986 allowed the
reconstruction and analysis of the sexual network underlying the epidemic
(5,389 vertices and 4,073 edges, giant component of 2,386 nodes and 3,168
edges), shedding light onto the spread of HIV and the role of contact-tracing.
Clustering based on modularity optimization provides a better visualization and
understanding of the network, in combination with the study of covariates. The
graph has a globally low but heterogeneous density, with clusters of high
intraconnectivity but low interconnectivity. Though descriptive, our results
pave the way for incorporating structure when studying stochastic SIR epidemics
spreading on social networks
